I went to high school in California from 1983 – 1987. No guns, no knives, no smoking, no drinking, no fighting at my high school.
It was probably similar to what you’d see in 80s movies but we were more childish. I remember talking to other kids about Apple II+ games, Dungeons & Dragons and sex (talking about it).
Cheap copies were made in purple ink on the mimeograph machine. I had a class where we learned about Shakespeare and put on a play (Merchant of Venice) for the parents.
Get into childish arguments with your friends. Band practice. Football and basketball games that I rarely attended. Little trends like making your own magazine or text-based swords and sorcery computer game in Apple BASIC. Listening to Doctor Demento. Trying to convince your parents to buy a VHS video tape recorder and then scheming to get a bootleg copy of Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Arguing about whether Darth Vader is Luke’s father or not.
Lusting after the cheerleaders. Feeling like crap because of the usual teenager depression. Being depressed feeling ugly and being anti-social.
I was probably bullied a little and bullied other kids a little but, mostly, it was just a mean comment for a few days.
In band class, the teacher let us watch tapes of SCTV which was kind of a cut-rate SNL.
Some kids starting having a car started in high school but it wasn’t really good or bad. Most of the cars were used and old pieces of junk. Nobody drove a BMW or Mercedes.
Teachers were mostly OK. Sometimes, we laughed in class at something funny that happened or was said. A few teachers were jerks, mainly because they had jerk personalities. A few teachers were loved because they were very personable with students. Nobody got hit. If you were bad, you got sent to the office and they called your parents who came and picked you up.
